Imagine this: you’re driving down the road, enjoying the radio, maybe you’re on your way to a get together and you hear a strange noise. You get out of your car and discover, to your horror, your tire has gone flat. Oh no!

What Should I Do After I Get a Flat Tire?

Evaluate Your Vehicle and Safely Exit the Road

You’ll be able to tell immediately if you have a flat tire. The first thing you need to do is develop a plan to safely exit the road. Make sure to put on your flashers, slowly move to the side of the road or get off the road if possible. Don’t keep driving on a flat tire to reach the nearest highway exit, either. In some situations, you can even exit to the left side of the highway if there is a median.

Change Your Spare Tire or Call for Help

Determine if you have a spare tire in your vehicle. This will usually be located in the trunk under the flooring. If you have experience replacing a flat tire, you can go ahead and do this yourself. If you don’t have experience, or don’t have a flat tire, it’s best to call AAA or a tow truck to come help.

Be wary of anyone who approaches you to offer help, especially at night. Wait for designated assistance to arrive, if you’ve called it.
